How much oxygen do plants give off?

Hello folks,

Can someone direct me to a newsgroup that discusses the relationship
between plants and animals? Specifically, I want to know the
contribution of oxygen from plants and how much of it is consumed by
animals, which plants give off the most oxygen, which animals breathe
out the most CO2, etc. I want to do some brainstorming for biospheric
research :-)

Is there a sci.biology, sci.botany or similar group on usenet? I've
tried searching these, but couldn't find any such active groups.

Thanks for any pointers,

Abdul Ahad

Thx... obvious source I had checked. The model of biosphere 2 is a good
one for educational purposes:

Dunno about on line but on paper look for anything by James Lovelock,
his writings are cogent and readable and his scientific credentials
impeccable. He is one of the first scientists to view this planet in a
holistic way and to recognise that the whole of the earth acts as a
system with many feedback loops such that nothing can happen on the
earth or in the atmosphere - biological or geological without
affecting the environment in many and complex ways.
Likewise Lynn Margoulis for a bit more in depth on cell biology and
evolution.

Thanks. Professor Lovelock's work does sound very interesting and I am
familiar with the Gaia theory. What needs to happen to avert the
current mass extinction that's gripped our planet? Can't remember the
name of that new BBC series by David Attenborough ("Exctinctioned"? or
something). It had me thinking for a few days.

Have you seen it?

It won't be a huge amount. Atmospheric oxygen and CO2 were very
consistent during most of the pre-industrial age. My understanding is
that during the day photosynthesis yields an amount of oxygen, but at
night nearly all of it is taken up again. The tiny balance sees CO2
tied up as hydrocarbons, but event those include some oxygen.

Nothing that sophisticated... just taking a breather really from all
that hard sci-fi writing ;-)
I wanted to know if someone had already cracked the code to re-creating
a new Garden of Eden up there on the Moon or someplace else in outer
space...

ISTR the single celled or simple algae manage impressive growth rates
in suitably optimised environmental tanks supplied with the right
nutrients.

Is there a sci.biology, sci.botany or similar group on usenet? I've

Thanks for any pointers,

Try bionet.* and/or sci.bio.*

bionet.photosynthesis looks like a fair place to ask in (and various
links from there)

How curious ... nobody mentioned cows.

Yeah let's go ahead and pretend global warming is the result of cow pies
lol. So much BS being reported on the news we should watch and listen to
it with a roll of toilet paper in hand.
