The books say to cut back lavender after flowering. Ours still
has abundant blooms. When should I get my secateurs out?

Leave it till the early spring. The birds will appreciate that as they take
the seeds. :-))

Lavender

Hi,
Cant believe this post, as most english lavender, flowers JULY and is
normally cut back to within 1 inch of old stem by end july..
That being said, this year , as last has been slightly out of kilter, due to
warmer average temps.

For the benefit of the plant, cut back after flowering, as to not allow seed
to set, which takes a great deal of from the plant.

I have grown about 16 different varieties of lavender, and have yet to se
any flower this late, may be exception being continental types.IE butterfly
lavender, which is tender, so cut back and protect if this is the type you
are referring to.

regards
Cineman.
Happy Christmas

P.S. Off to get Turkey into oven now.

(snipette)

Off course! There's some light spring pruning that can be done to give
the younger plants a shape - but usually all our lavenders are cut by
August (as I am usually on hols before that :o)

This lavender can still look in full bloom but is quite dry and dead on
closer inspection. I've had one which transplanted well, and I kept for
perhaps 7 years. Because I had lots of under planting you couldn't see
the bare stems - looked great on the border. Eventually it had to go on
the bonfire and it smelt devine.

Happy Christmas
