Question: Grow veg without a Greenhouse

- Yes - easy
- Yes - but is a lot harder
- No - you are gonna have to get one
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hiya

I am very new to gardening, I would like to start growing my own
organic veg for my family but I don't have or likely to have the funds
for a Greenhouse. Is it really possible for me to grow veg without
having to start it all off in a greenhouse??

Any advice very gratefully received.

I'm curious as to this poll thing you've set up. Are you simply going to
base your decision on the poll? Or will the quality of the answers given
have any influence on what you decide to do?

Incidentally, you may not have realised that what you are posting to is
a newsgroup, uk.rec.gardening, and that those of us who post directly to
uk.rec.gardening may not feel inclined to visit gardenbanter to take
part in the poll.

I think that GB has set up the poll itself based on the question asked by
the original poster. Maybe its a new tactic they are trying?

I'd suggest abandoning gardenbanter, which is parasitic on
nntp://uk.rec.gardening, and joining us direct. If you don't know how
to access usenet, there is an online client at
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.rec.sheds until you get going. You
will be made most welcome...

Most veg can be sown directly and will grow perfectly. I know that
some people start runner beans, marrows etc. in pots and plant out,
but I suspect that is as much to do with letting them get established
before the slugs have access to them as with encouraging germanation.
In my family they have always been sown directly and worked perfectly
well.

Tomato plants can be started on the kitchen windowsill and planted out
into growbags in the garden, or into the soil. People use greenhouses
to extend the growing period and maximise production. You don't need
to do either.

I would have thought that vegetable gardening is the area that needs a
greenhouse least.

The issue of protecting seedlings from slugs is a big one though, and I
am sure you can get lots of advice on that here. I'd grow things up to
at least 3 inch height, possibly 6 inch, in pots on a window sill or
even on a garden table that has slug access prevention, before risking
them in the soil. Then surround them with ashes, broken egg shells,
anything really abrasive, while they get established. Even slug
pellets if you have no organic ambitions.

The best slug-proof table I ever saw was my Grandfather's. He had an
old kitchen table with tubular metal legs. Each leg was stood in a
small enamel pudding basin, which he kept topped up with water.

To get you going without the precautions, you can buy ready-started
tomato and runner bean plants at nurseries, hardware stores, village
shops, all over the country at the right time of year!

No you don't need a greenhouse. Loads of stuff like spinach potatoes beans
and onions, go straight into the ground. Other stuff like tomatoes and
courgettes need to be started indoors. There are also veg like leeks and
sweetcorn that may need to be started indoors depending on how far north you
live, but unless you were thinking of growing a huge acreage you probably
have enough room on your window sills. Also these sorts of plants can often
be bought ready started from garden centres or by mail order. If you tell
us what you hope to grow and roughly where in the country you live,
doubtless some people will be able to give you more detailed advice.

Hi

Greenhouses only extend the growing season a little especially if they
are unheatd, I have grown my own tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and
cucumbers for a few years without (starting off the plants on a
windowsill etc. ) and also with a greenhouse. If you post what you
intend to grow we canmaye give more specfic advice

happy growing

Although it's useful, rather than essential, a heated greenhouse means you
can start e.g. tomato plants rather earlier. Ray planted ours a little
while ago (Jersey Sunrise) and they're about 3" high and have been potted on
once already. His father (when they grew toms commercially) insisted the
seeds were put in on 15 November but that was in heated and huge
greenhouses, too. Ray tells me that one year his father insisted the seeds
were planted so as to coincide with the waxing moon, as did a lot of older
gardeners and nurserymen and they reached the potting on stage just over
Christmas, when there were no staff available. The family was NOT
pleased..... ;-)

Oh Kay I didn't mean to get anyones back up or cause offense - my post
is geniune - all I am after is a little advice regarding gardening and
veg growing.

As for the poll - loads of forums do it - it is just a little bit of
fun, frivolity if you like. Not the waving of a red flag to a bull.

I have obviously come to the wrong site for some friendly advice - I do
hope that you can forgive me.

But you did get friendly advice and information. A lot of urglers object to
gardenbanter 'pinching' our posts and using them to promote their own
interests, thus gardenbanter posters tend not to get a lot of replies and
are invited to join uk.rec.gardening direct, using their newsreader.

I don't really have a problem with garden banter showing 'our' posts -
anything that promotes gardening must be a good thing. Beside many people do
not know about usenet and forums will probably be the way things will be in
the future. We'll all probably be saying 'remember' the good old days of URG
when we are in our dotage :~))

There is friendly advice here - even if people read it on GB

Come on and duck behind it with me :-)) Plenty of room :-))

I ask again, if gardening is gardening is gardening, and as you say there is
plenty of advice there, why why why does there have to be the aggression in
gardening? (I do note that when there is any aggression about, one person is
nearly always in the middle of it)

Hiya

Thanks for all the great replies.

I live in Stockport, Cheshire which is not too cold but definately damp!!!

I am really looking forward to growing my own veg - feel much more confident now that I know that a green house isn't a "must have"

I do have an old table in the garden so I am gonna try the old table legs in pudding basins of water trick - thanks for the tip.

You've come to the right place - uk.rec.gardening (1). It's just that
you've snuck in through the back door - gardenbanter. Not your fault.

(1) Did you know that your post actually appeared on uk.rec.gardening?
