The trouble with Jerusalem Artichokes

Did anyone see "Grow your own veg" on BBC2 last night? It was
enthusiastically promoting Jerusalem Artichokes as easy to grow and
good to eat, enough to induce me to order some seed tubers this
morning, but omitted to mention a key fact about these little chaps.
I know from experience that, although they are delicious, and hence
make you want to eat a lot of them, they are the very devil for
causing flatulence, unless you are very restrained about how much you
eat. Does anyone know the answer to this? Is there something you
can eat or cook with them, which will enable you to enjoy the
wonderful flavour without making you fart?

It's said that fennel is anti-fartaceous, but I don't believe it. Not
at all sure it would go with J artichokes, either. Maybe restrict
yourself to one or two dishes a week, or get a dog to blame for the
eruptions. I was interested to see the variety they had: quite big
chunky roots, while the only ones I've seen were long and thin.

John Seymour used to say that growing a patch of Jerusalem artichokes
would attract pheasants. . .not that he would have dreamt of suggesting
anything so antisocial as shooting other people's pheasants, of course,
M'Lud.

Don't you just _love_ Carol? Genuine infectious enthusiasm after all
those years in the business, no nauseating telly-bizzery, total lack of
talking down or disrespect for the audience. As I've said before, I do
hope TV makes more use of its older women.

Yes Caraway seeds. Also add them to vegetable stews and bean
recipes. Did you know that besides making you fart, artichokes
have diuretic properties. The more of them you eat, the more time
you'll spend in the loo spending a penny. Carol didn't mention that
did she!

Having heard the reputation of JA and then hearing Carol (Isn't she a
delight!) describe them as a "wind break" I wonder if there is a
double meaning to that, or even a misinterpretation!

Well all in all I think I'll give them a miss. But it was good to hear
vintage Genesis and ELP in a gardening programme!

She's lovely - I've always loved her voice. She's simple and so easy to
understand - I feel I'd work well with her around the garden,
effortlessly, in perfect synch, almost psychic like I do with my best
gardening mates :o) Those hands peeling the artichokes were true hard
working hands. You simply can't go wrong with simplicity and showing it
the way it is. There's so much I want to discover from her garden - I
think we'll see only one veg at a time through the same year. It's a
great idea. Great show. Can't wait next week.

She is BRILLIANT. Grubby hands, filthy boots, loads of wrinkles :~)
She's an inspiration. I really felt I wanted to taste those tatties boiled
in the garden !

Yes! I could not believe my ears. The ELP I heard (only saw half the
programme) was from Trilogy (Abaddon's Bolero and In the Beginning) and it
sounded amazing and not at all dated. Sold all my ELP albums about 25 years
ago though so cannot check it out again and am too shy to be seen buying
prog rock on-line :-).

Where can you get tubers (on-line in UK or Ireland)?
I used to have a patch of perennial sunflowers that looked just like the
artichokes and they were nice looking enough to make me want a patch, wind
or not.

Thompson and Morgan sell them online

I think they only deliver in the UK

She's an inspiration - such a natural. I really enjoyed the programme,
which seemed to find just the right balance between (literally) down to
earth and instructional on the one hand, and showing how it can be a
huge amount of enjoyable fun on the other. It was a breath of fresh air
in the stuffy old winter programming schedule.

Bless her woolly mufflers. :)

Thanks Gill; I will check that; they certainly deliver seeds here (and have
local agents) but tubers may indeed be another story.

I wouldn't, they are very tasty, you are not compelled to eat them every day
you know.
