Default PH Meter

Just been playing with a ph meter on an allotment plot I recently acquired. It would seem that there is a ph gradient which roughly follows the slope of the plot. At the higher (SSW) end, the soil appears to neutral and it gets more acidic as you go down the plot.
Is this sort of thing normal? I was expecting the ph to vary only slightly over the whole plot.
