planting blueberries - pot size?
 

I have just bought a small Bluecrop plant to go with my establighed
Northland bush.
The Bluecrop is quite small at the mement - when moving it from the
garden centre's pot, should I put it in a container big enough to
support the full grown bush, or can I use a smaller one to start with
and then move it up again in a few years ?

(I have the perfect small pot, but will need to buy a larger one if
needed.. :( )

Don't move it into a bigger pot until it really looks as if it needs it -
probably next year and then onwards in stages. The reason for this is if
you plant it into a too-big pot immediately it gets far too much water and
the roots won't like standing around in the cold and wet.
If it looks rootbound now, move it into your perfect pot if it's about one
size up but otherwise I'd wait.

What is 18' cube pot - I make this 45cm diametre, yes? If yes that's
20 litres pots - which I have my blueberries in too and flourishing
beautifully :o)

It really does depend on what size plant the OP bought. If it's a baby in a
one litre pot, putting it into the much larger, final sized pot he has in
mind for a full grown bush, would not do it any good.

All blueberries are sold in 2 or 3 litres pot, not 1 litre pot. They
are shrubs.

Sorry but have to advise I have three blueberries that came in 1l pots
- ex gardeners world special offer. Last year Tesco were selling
Goldtraube which looked like they had been raised as maxi plugs and
pushed into long tom type containers for a £5. OK Tesco not the
height of horticultural practice but sold that way for one reason -
price. Shrubs are out there in 1l containers. It isn't the end of
the world if they are - just have to wait a little longer thats all.

Besides as Sacha has said - the pot size (irrespective of what it is
is) wants a gradual increase.

The only point I would add to the conversation is to make note on
compost - one of the occasions where I think peat is needed. I would
use a blend of peat, B & Q soil improver and grit and some top soil to
the ratio of 3:2:1:1 The top soil just gives the mix a little body
without seriously raising the pH.

A lot depends on market forces and blueberries are 'in' right now. They're
very good to eat and they're very good for you! As you've pointed out, it's
possible to find shrubs in all sorts of container sizes and to some extent,
that depends on whether e.g. B&Q have bought a huge number from a wholesaler
and want to push them out fast, or perhaps a nursery brings on their own
stock and sells them at varying sizes.

That's the key, of course and does not apply just to blueberries. We don't
take our baby tomato seedlings out of 7cm pots and put them straight into
growbags, either! ;-)

Really - I am very surprised. You'll have to wait indeed before
getting some berries. They must be minute. Most shrubs I get are in
2/3 even 4 littres pots.

I don't use peat and don't buy plants from B&Q nor Tesco. Perhaps
that's why I've never seen blueberries in 1 littre pot!

of fruit for other Fruit nurseries. Amonsgst their offerings they are
selling 1 litre Blue Crop at £4 or 3 litre at £11.

To get the best out of blueberries you need to replecate a heathland
soil. I do not generally use pat but have found that if you want to
get the best out of them you have little choice

The one litre pots are part of a collection of three and though it's
extremely tempting, I feel I don't want to wait 2 years before
harvesting! I had never seen them in such little pots before. Thanks
for the link - I might just get a White Bianca grape ;o)

I mulch mine every year with our xmas tree, needles and bark, and
don't use any peat at all. Check out Kew's ideas for alternatives to
peat.
