All the talk of moss in lawns prompts me to ask if anyone can tell me of a
product that will kill moss on hard surfaces as we have it growing on walls,
paths and the house roof. Something which can be sprayed on that really does
kill it would be good as I have tried some chemicals from garden centres
without much success.

It scrapes off readily. Why do you want to use toxic chemicals when
there is an easy mechanical solution?

There is nothing that will prevent it regrowing that won't damage the
environment, not to say passing children and animals.

Jeyes Fluid will kill it for a while, but will stain concrete for a
while and the smell lingers.......

A pressure washer will remove it.

But nothing is permanent, although it's often said that a length of
bare copper wire along either side of the ridge will stop it growing
on the roof, but I have no personal experience. Apparently the tiny
amounts of copper leached out of the wire are enough to prevent moss
growth. If that's true, then a copper-based fungicide might prevent
its growth of paths etc. for quite a while.

where it does not form a hazard. I encourage it to grow, usually without
success.
As Chris said a copper based fungicide is your best bet and copper
/lead/zinc flashings or gauze will prevent it recolonising.

Ferric Chloride and Ferrous Sulphate kill moss but it will return.

Yes Nick it does scrape off when I can get to it, but up on the roof its not
that easy. Does it do any harm on roof tiles? Bob the cross eyed builder
says it eats the concrete tiles away, but does it? I would be just as happy
to leave it where it is if it does no harm. The paths it covers do become
quite slippery, I have scraped it off but it returns quite quickly which is
why I would like a chemical solution.

Chris, I shall try the copper wire idea on the annex roof, as that one is
quite easy to get to and report back in a year or so, thanks for the tip.

Anyone know where I can buy the Ferric Chloride or Ferrous Sulphate that
Martin recommends?

You should live so long!

There are tiles (admittedly 'brick' not concrete) that have had moss on
for several centuries. Its causes some damage by trapping water, which
dissolves the concrete, but we are still talking about MANY decades and
perhaps a few centuries.

Compared with algae, I find moss positively grippy :-( Many of us have
that problem, and none of us have a solution. Sorry.

Exactly so. I think I'd only worry about it on a roof it was acting as a
sponge and allowing water to drip into the building, as it does in
glasshouses. It's a damned nuisance then.
