Just to say thanks to all who have sent their greetings.
I almost feel as if I havn't been away, so many old faces still here, or should I say "long standing members". Also there are still many familiar threads, all in all it's nice to see URG thriving. David Hill Abacus Nurseries. |

Totally remiss of me not to join in the return welcome Dave, but it's
good to see you back and I hope you're well and truly on the mend. Just do me one tiny favour and don't cause me too get enthusiastic about Dahlias. I don't have room for the interesting ones and with Sacha teasing me with Choklit brownies it gets somewhat problematic. I simply can't accommodate D. campanulata or anything similar, I really can't. I'm sure you'll understand. That campanulata is really something though innit? Paired up with a good form of Hibiscus acetosella it would look simply stunning. What am I talking about? There's no room for the Hibiscus either! |

It looks as if D,Coccina is going the way of Primula wandii, which for so many years was a distinct plant, but now comes on many colours. I saw seed of D. coccina on offer the other day in a mixture of colours from white to red, yellow to orange and purple. it should have been labeled D. coccina hybrids. |

Only a couple of seed from the pack seemed to be viable, but they resulted in beautiful, sturdy, floriferous plants. The dark, dissected foliage is more than equal to that of 'Bishop of Llandaff', and the flowers are, in my opinion, even better - a deep red with no yellow centres. I also tried growing the seeds sold by Thompson & Morgan under the confusing and presumably inaccurate name of Dahlia coccinea 'species mixed'. True, they look colourful on the packet, but the resulting plants were all duds - dull foliage and small, unexciting yellow flowers. |
