Old slate roof tiles as decorative mulch or any other garden use ???
Hi there,
I've found a huge stack of old slate roof tiles in the corner of my shed and was wondering if they could be of any use in the garden ? I am all for recycling and thought perhaps they could be put to use as some kind of decorative mulch. Is this a feasible idea ? Perhaps someone could suggest other practical garden uses for the tiles. I would appreciate any imaginative solutions ! Thanks very much. Uncle. |

They may be worth up to a fiver each. |

I have birds which throw any mulch I use all over the place and I must use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. I use rocks on top of mulch around newly planted trees. Rocks can also be used to capture the sun's heat during the day and to then release heat to warm the plant overnight. Perhaps they could be used in this way. Or even to just sit on top of some clear ground to warm it up at the start of the season. Perhaps they could also be used as an edging round veg beds as they could sit up higher than the surrounding soil if you need to slightly raise beds. Or use them on a small tool shed perhaps. Whatever you do, don't chuck them. You'll find a use at some time. |

Pam in Bristol But get them valued first. Seriously! I remember a London builder offering to take an Edwardian fireplace out of my daughter's house as a 'favour' to her. She asked my advice which was 1. never remove original features from a house, 2. sack the builder (who did indeed turn out to be crooked) and 3. check the price of such a fireplace at an antique reclamation yard. She had a shock! -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon http://www.discoverdartmoor.co.uk/ (remove weeds from address) |

Don Witton who has one of the national collections of Euphorbias on an allotment at Harthill used a lot of smashed slates crushed to make paths round his beds. I regularly dig old roofing slates out of my own rubble strewn site. Only one in a hundred is intact so the rest go for mulch. I smash them down to 3cm size pieces first. The fine chippings, flakes and dust go in the potting compost. The intact ones go for edgings etc. But if you have a good number of intact tiles I'd certainly suggest selling them. |

Years ago i used to stick a slate in the soil in front of some young plants to block the noon sun, thus reducing water consumption and enable them to survive. A nicer use might be for patios & paths, lay concrete and press the slates on while its wet. NT |
