do mice eat courgette seeds?

I have mysteriously misplaced my courgette seeds! Well I am positive I
sowed them into peat pots, about a week ago, after which I labelled them
and put them in the greenhouse. There's a sort of depression in the
centre of each pot (about 20) but I can't find the seed!
The peas and beans seem okay though they were on the heated bench but I
have no trace of my courgette, neither round type or ordinary!

Do Mice go for them? I thought they only ate pea and bean seeds?

Our courgette seeds had come through yesterday so I took off the cover. This
morning I found that every one had been eaten - still a bit of stem left but
the leaves have completely gone. Similar problem with sweetcorn. And yes I
do think it is mice.

I don't grow veg but I'm under the impression they eat just about anything.

They love seeds. I use sunflower seeds in the mousetraps and they're very
effective.

Right, this means war and another packet of courgette seeds. The mouse
won't beat me! I guess it couldn't get to the others so I am going to
put a cover over them.
At what size will they not bother?

I can't answer your last question, but I've just re-read your OP and I have
a couple of my own. You said "There's a sort of depression in the centre of
each pot" Are you sure you didn't put the depression there ready to sow and
then get distracted? When I make a depression, I put the seed in, then
cover the seed and then there's no depression any more.

The other one is "There's a sort of depression in the
centre of each pot (about 20)"

TWENTY? how many courgettes are you aiming for?

Steve

I would think that once the seeds had germinated the mice would not be
interested any more!

Yes Janet, when Mice take out seed they often leave a depression in
the compost, as to when they stop, when the plant stems get tough and
not worth eating.
I have had 4 traps on a bench now for about 2 weeks and in that time I
have had 12 mice, using peanuts as bait.

That courgette description sounds like slugs.

No I sowed them carefully as 4 were from a friend and the rest were
round ones for an NGS stand, the gardening club sale and a charity sale
I only want two!

I definitely sowed them, I have the nearly empty packet left and I
always put vermiculite on the top so that I know the pot has got a seed
in.

|Thanks David. I have now sown the others indoors and once they are big
enough I'll put them in the greenhouse with protection. They haven't
touched the broccoli, Brussels sprouts or mange tout but I will
probably put fleece or something over them now to stop any mice. Think
I'll also put a trap on the bench as suggested.
