urg & Chelsea?

We met someone at the DCS today who's going up to Chelsea to judge. This
reminded me that some years ago urg discussed trying to do a small garden at
Chelsea and how to go about it etc. It must be a good while back. Four
years, five? I do recall a discussion on who would be chairman of any such
project and I think I suggested Cormaic who rejected the honour on the
grounds that he'd had a tactectomy. ;-)
Quite a bit of chitchat went back and forth and then we went away for a few
weeks and when we came back, the whole thing had sort of died the death.
Does anyone remember why it wasn't carried forward?

I remember it well but I thought it was much more than five years
ago!!! Wasn't there some suggestion about making it a CD garden?

I can't remember why it fell through, Jane Ranson was posting then as,
of course, was Kay so perhaps she will know what happened.

Sounds a bit Diarmuid but I do remember CDs now that you mention them.

I hope so. You could well be right as to timing - I'd have to trawl through
Google to check that and I'm too tired now!

I don't think anything in particular happened - I just don't think
enough of us had sufficient passion to have the energy to get the idea
off the ground.

I think it just sort of fizzled out, no one obviously felt like taking
up the idea and running with it.

I would say it was well over 5 years ago and a "Rope Theme" was talked
about. I offered my services to find the rope and erect same and I believe I
offered time as well. Without going back over the archives, I believe I
offered to make a model, but someone will correct me if this is wrong. A
silent lurker loves to pop up with any correction which has to be made with
regards to my postings.

Regret I am unable to offer any time now as I am very busy on ex Service
Reunions, 16 now planned, and a 'new career' in being a Guest Speaker!!

Kindest regards

Mike

That sounds about right. ;-) It would probably have been very difficult to
do with all of us living so far apart and having very different ideas, too.
In fact, it would probably have turned out to be a camel. ;-)

Why don't we have our own on-line flower/garden show ?
We could submit photo`s or a web site of our gardens and hopefully find
someone to judge them.

It's an interesting idea but I don't know if photos would show gardens well
enough. Do we show to RHS standards (!) or do we just ask someone impartial
to say which is best. And then, by what criteria? The web ring has photos
of urglers' gardens on it but I haven't looked recently to see how up to
date it is. I think Cormaic was maintaining that and he hasn't had any time
to himself lately!

I think that in the end common sense prevailed, the logistics etc. as
well as getting accepted by the RHS would have been a full time job.
I would think that if anything like this was to rear its head again
then a show like the Malvern Spring show would be much better, they
are looking for gardens, and have virtually unlimited space.
But speaking for myself a show later in the season would be better as
May/June are my peak times.

Same here, David. It's a very busy time of year and it's also v. exxpensive
long term. There's the transportation of a wide variety of plants which
means hire of a big van/s; there's accommodation for all who go and of
course, there's entry fees. A lot of the 'big boys' have people who do
nothing but design show gardens, bring on plants especially cultivated for
shows and then actually do the shows. It's interesting to do and I've
enjoyed the two we've done but we've done them for PR purposes, frankly.
That said, nearly everyone who walked past our stand yesterday said "oh,
we're already customers of yours, our car could find its own way
there"......so, is it worth doing next year? We'll decide nearer the time!

That was one of the sillier ideas trying to make it 'Internet themed'

I think we found that we had to apply much sooner than we were ready.
