We have moles within three feet of out new lawn. Help!!

I've read everything I can find on the web and in brief it seems to be..

Ultrasonic devices don't work
Repellants don't work
There are no licenced poisons for moles.
Trapping is the only way

....unless you know otherwise?

We had a man come in and he put poisoned worms down the runs. It
didn't work. I poured bleach down, it did work.

I've tried everything down the holes from traps to bleach to poisoned worms
to hosepipe attached to the exhaust of the car to cooking oil to petrol etc,
and all they do is make the mole close it's tunnel and open another
elsewhere - which may be on your neighbours garden or the middle of your new
lawn!

I've given up fighting them (my lawn is nearly an acre) and will never look
like a bowling green.

However, I've heard other people rave about this lethal looking thing:

A "mole trap plunger" - Look on Google for that phrase if the link below
doesn't work.

Ironically I've found a good use for the moles now - I use the fine soil of
the mole hills for potting on plants, it's nice and fine and relatively free
of weed seeds. So now I'm not too disappointed when I see yet more hills on
the lawns. Not such a bonus if your lawn is fresh laid though!

Hello David,

Do you remember Jane Ransom, she was a mole exterminator
extraordinairre! I took all her advice, I even used my Louis Vuitton
handbag and thumped the heaving mole hills but I didn't have the knack
and like you came to accept the mole but I haven't seen him now for
two years. Maybe the bleach did the trick.

Many years ago I worked on a private estate . We had a big mle problem in
one of the larger lawns (nearly an acre) I used an old rotovator with a hose
on the exaust. The engine on the rotovator was just about knakered and
smoked more than I do. I left it running and went about other jobs. When I
returned to the lawn I could clearly see the smoke puffin out of holes all
acroos the lawn. I then took the pipe and poked it into one of the other
holes that did not have smoke puffing out. I kept moving the hose around
untill I had sseen smoke from most parts of the lawn. I saw no more mole
activityion that lawn for the rest of the season. I can't say what happen
the following season as my Boss passed away and I was made redundant. I did
manage to er aquire a few old fashioned tools. The best of which is a spud
dibber made from a lump of oak. I still have it me shed but have never used
it since but it makes a nice keep sake.

Speaking to somebody recently and he said he went out in the early morning
and when he saw a mole hill slowly growing he crept over to it and waited
for more movement. A blast from his 12 bore put paid to the mole!

He also told me that if a mole bumps its nose onto a thorn, it will die. I
suppose an infection sets in.

The theory is that they bleed to death. No idea if it's true, though.

No, it dies of shock because of the sensitivity of its nose. My French
neighbour used to kill them by bashing them on the nose with his spade.

After much research I found two DEFRA articles on how to get rid of moles.

One examines just about every trick used across europe including old wives
tales...

In brief it seems the only two ways that work (or are allowed) are trapping
and gassing with aluminium phosphide.

So I ordered ten traps and set six yesterday - three scissor and three
barrel. I like the barrel trap as it's easy to cover without soil falling
into the tunnel. Overnight one barrel trap caught a mole so I reset it.. Two
hours later after cutting the lawn I noticed the same trap had sprung again
and yes there was another mole in it!

Wow. Next day there was another mole in the same trap and a forth mole in a
different trap. So far it's barrel traps 4 sissor traps 0.
