Hello,

I don't know much about roses in general, but I'm thinking of planting
one or two.

My garden isn't that huge, so I'm probably looking for something thats
relatively tall ( 6ft, 15ft) but doesn't take up too much space, it
doesn't need to be too neat and tidy, but at the same time something
like a moyesii would be too wild.....I prefer single flowers and I'm
not too fussed about scent...I quite like things like 'dortmund',
'parkdirektor riggers', 'altissisimo', but am aware that they are
climbers.....can they be grown as free standing shrubs?.....can anyone
recommend any of these in particular or anything else?

My soil is clay, I live in the midlands in the UK, so it needs to be
reasonably hardy, and would probably be in fullish sun.

More pink than red but have you seen Rosa complicata? in flower at the
moment and a real stunner, great scent as well.

Paul's Scarlet Climber is and old favourite, Mark.It's no trouble
and lasts for years.

It was Sugar Candy that year, we stand the pot fulls that go to shows along
there when they have done their bit and let them grow up the montana
foliage, cut them away in the Autumn and redo them for the following year.

I have seen complicata...and I like it....its a bit low
growing.....not really red either, but thats a secondary issue....I
was thinking of something a bit taller and less sprawly.

Is there a specialist rose grower near you? If so pay them a visit and
have a look at what's in flower now, also ask their advice. I go to
Fryers, which is just North of Knutsford, Cheshire. As regards your
soil, roses prefer clay as they are happiest with good anchorage.

Mattocks just south of Oxford....thats where I've seen
Altissismo....unfortunately they didn't have it for sale.

Look up Rosa 'Smarty', ignore the height info, its huge mines at least 20'
again its single pink.
or maybe 'Rosy Cushion'
both go up if given some support

Thats more like it.....a sort of tamed dog rose. I'll add it to the
list.
