Strange Weather?

What is the weather like in the UK? Here in our little hamlet on the other
side of the Channel it has been cold, grey and a fine mist hanging in the
air for the last three days. Nothing like the middle of June. It is
strangely eerie, like something has gone wrong with the planet.

David.

Oh David - it's been very very hot here, in the North West. Glorious
in fact. Made it to the sea for a picnic. Cool evenings though, but
amazing last 5 days. Nothing unusual - that's what summer should be
like! Looks like rain for the week end, but I'm glad. It will fill up
the water buts and will refresh the hanging baskets. Hope some good
weather will come your way soon. (Off to Napoli and Ischia next week
to check their gardens and public spaces - it was 25C there today,
which is not as hot as it should be and it is raining there, strangely
too).

The weather here in the UK is always strange, and has been for hundreds of
years, one of the interesting things about living in the UK!

Hi David,

Actually, it's just the way it should be for early June. It's April that was
the aberration! This is Normandy after all, in spite of the last 6 years of
hot and dry weather.

Still, thinking about planting grape vines in me lower field... ;) I think
my wife would probably have me locked up, mind you.

I think April and June have got swapped somehow! I can't believe how
miserable June has been so far here.

I would agree with that, we returned this week from France, there was
not one day in the 10 days we were there when the sun shone!! My
husband is going back next week and what's the bet the sun will shine.

I hope you're right, we're fed up with this grey weather. The slugs and
snails seem to be enjoying it though. I've had to revert to the little blue
pellets :-(

Certainly sunny enough this morning, though I think we're in for a pretty
good boom this afternoon.

I will say that one amusing thing is how wrong meteofrance has been:
throughout the grey patch they kept insisting it was hot and sunny. ;)

But a month of June like we had last year is definitely not normal for
the area. We should be getting that light misty rain -- la brume --
with a stiff west wind at least half the time in May/June. Often the
sun shows up around 4h30 for a few hours. That's what kept it so
green here. The brume really only clears out in July/August fully.

Just saw a report on the French news, the researchers at the CNRS
are saying that in 2100 Paris will have a climate about equivalent to
today's Rome. (Hence my grape vine fantasy; just as the Champagne
houses are currently buying land on the south downs.)

Yes, the weather forecasters here seem to be as bad as in the UK.
My wife is always cursing them - she does the washing on the promise of good
drying weather, often for it to rain or be misty all day!
As you say - today looks like being a scorcher!
I see all the garden centres here sell grape vines - is that mainly for
ornamental reasons up the side of a South facing wall or in conservatories
or are they intended for planting outdoors for cropping? We've got climbers
of most varieties so am wondering about growing a grape or two up the old
barn.

David.
