Constructing a fence out of Bamboo sticks
 

Hi,
I have some bamboo sticks and I would like to construct a fence out of
it using some thick thread or a rope to hold the joints. Does anyone
have a link or an idea how to do this? Please advise. Thanks

In order to maintain some sort or regularity in such a fence you need a
construction jig.

Assuming the bamboo canes are not very thick:-

Use roofing battens (the larger ones) near the top and bottom of the fence.

Cut four lengths of batten about 2 metres long but any length will do.

Clamp or screw two batten lengths together such that their wider surfaces
are touching.

Bore holes (mind the screws!!) through the junction of the battens so that
each, when taken apart, have grooves running across them (Identify each end
of each pair of battens) The distance between bamboos is up to you but I
would not think it need be wide.

The canes can then be placed in the grooves and the other piece of batten
clamped so as to hold the canes whilst you use cord to tie them together.
As many lines of cord as you wish. You can weave the cord along the canes
knotting them as you go.

You should be able to imagine variations on the construction of the jig
using other sizes of wood or even one plank with a line of larger holes
bored through; then cut apart. Anything really just to hold the canes
steady whilst they are tied.

I dare say somebody (An ex-boy scout perhaps!!) will advise on the type of
knot to use.

I hope your canes are all straight!

A link, no. But standard practice is to use 3 pairs of lines. If you
are making the fence flat, swap the upper and lower ones for each cane,
and tie a simple thumb knot every half dozen or so. How long you make
sections is up to you.

Construction jig P.S.
 

Rather than using battens two metres long, think about having four short
lengths each having (say) grooves for six or seven canes. Clamp up and tie
the canes using two jig lengths then place other jig lengths so that the
sixth or seventh cane is in its first groove. Add more canes, clamp up the
second jig lengths and remove the first two etc. etc. etc.

The above would make it easier to use the kitchen table to work on!!!
