SWMBO has spent lots of effort in getting a bumper crop of tomatoes (not
sure of the type) and the blighters just won't ripen either on or off the
vine.

We have a small greenhouse with a few in, no ripening there either, and
plenty of watering for the outside plants which has produced good fruit all
still green.

Anyone any tips?

The acetone given off by ripe bananas will assist picked tommies to redden,
so place a banana in a basket (the sort florists use) and place them
somewhere cool. they should redden nicely.

Coat them in artificial colour in the form of non toxic paint of the
type given to children to eat. Place a large denomination banknote in
the collection plate Sunday morning and offer an appeal to the deity of
your choice or just be patient and let nature do it's thing in it's own
good time, which it will.

Hmm,
Didn't know that.

I'll pass the info on to SWMBO and await the delivery from Fyffes...

Why non toxic?
Given that children will eat anything it would be a good experiment to see
what paints are or aren't toxic....especially when ingested in quantity.....
I feel an experiment developing

Damn!
If I did place said note into a plate ona Sunday it would only mean that
either
1. I have decided to pay myself said sum.
or
2 I am paying for my breakfast in a roadside cafe.

Both appeal...

That's because bananas don't give off acetone. You'd be in trouble if they
did.

Ethylene is what they give off.

Good ideas, all three.

Especially the last one.

good advice for later in the season when it is getting too cool to ripen
late ones left on the plant.

I wouldn't do it now though, just wait, they will ripen when they are
ready. We've had a lot of clody rainy weather lately, this will slow
ripening.

AKA Ethyne and Acetylene, probably the latter is where the confusion got
caused. All fruit do it, but bananas are one of the most prolific.

I wonder if you had a big enough vat of bananas whether or not you could
do some welding.

Acetelyne and ethylene are NOT the same chemical. ethylene is C2H4 and has a
double bond between the carbon atoms it is naturally produce by plants as a
a plant hormone. Acetylene is C2H2 and has a triple bond between the carbon
atoms. Acetelyne is far more reactive than ethylene as AFAIK can not be produced
naturally by plants or animals. In modern chemical nomencalture ethylene in
called ethene and Acetylene in called ethyne.

I've grown tomatoes for 5 years now against a north facing wall (no choice
really), so ripening has always been an issue.

Get a few shallow boxes, we use shoe boxes, line with some kitchen paper and
place the tomatoes in, either on the vine or separately. We snip them so the
stalk stays attached. Place one fully ripe tomato in the box, put on the lid
and leave somewhere warm for 2 weeks.
On checking you should find most ripening nicely.

My bad, serves me right for relying on memory, been 16 years since I
last studied chemistry and I only ever used the IUPAC names at uni, the
older common names are too confusing. it was the 'y' in Ethylene than
made me think it was ethyne rather than ethene.

Apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently misled.
