I raised one from a caterpillar when I was a little boy. Collecting
the willowherb was my daily duty. It seemed to take forever to go
through its development stages. I can still remember the day it
emerged and opened its wings for the first time. Later its wings
turned green and pink and it flew away, my beautiful pet had gone!

Thanks, Mike. I see 'my' Jersey Tiger is mentioned. ;-) I bet you
anything you like not one moth will be visible here on the night of 11th
August but if it's a fine night, we'll give it a try.

Even if there are no moths to be seen there are still (if its fine) the
Perseid meteors to be admired, and typically they peak just after the
11th so there should be a few around.

I've just remembered we're going to be in Jersey that very night, so I'll
have to see if I can persuade the family to join me in this slightly
eccentric exercise!

I have a good resident population of Hawkmoths as well, and they
occasionally fly in. (The other night a red-green carpet moth flew in
and sat for a good while by the keyboard near the light, looking very
handsome.)

if you should find yourself near Sevilla cathedral at night, but
before the floodlights go out, look up at the myriad nightjars
hunting moths.
