Runner beans

Due to the hot, dry week we had, mine are coming to an end (i.e. the
last of the beans are filling and there are no flowers). Since we
have had over an inch of rain, they might start again. Does anyone
know how reliably they do that and how long it takes? There are
plenty of new shoots, but currently all leaves not flowers.

Regards,
Nick Maclaren.

We still have loads and loads. I can't give them away fast enough. Anyway where are you Nick to have had a long hot week - certainly not down in Hampshire!!

If I'm at home I water my runners from the butts if it's dry. It hasn't been
dry often this year, in Leeds.

Have you got a monoculture ?
or even a single sowing ?

Well, yes - this IS the UK!

Runner beans are continual croppers, so you don't do repeat sowing.
The reason was quite simply a hot, dry week on soil that is 60% sand.
But the looks of it, I shall have flowers again in a few days.

Nick Maclaren.

Of course this is the UK ! and of course they do, usually !!
To ask if you did a single sowing was but a minor part of my post,
I sow at least twice for runner beans, one early and one later !
This is not synonymous with successional sowing !

My main question was monoculture. Two, or several, different varieties
are a better insurance against 'things' !
As are young vigorous plants - against those that may have been
stressed by earlier happenings.

The reason was quite simply a hot, dry week on soil that is 60% sand.

Good for you, so you had all the answers to satisfy you already, and
had no interest in further conversation !
