Specialist Thorny Plants ?
 

Hi All.

I hope the group can help me, for reasons not worth bothering you
with, I'm interested in finding the most blood hungry thorny plant
that will grow fast and vigorously in the UK or even better a range of
types :) :) I've an area of deep shade and another exposed in full
sun.

To be clear I don't want a pussy like Pyracantha or Hawthorn I want
"Grow Your Own Razor Wire!!", Little Shop of Horrors.

Any specialist sites I might ask on?

Exotics that I may be able to get hold of? They would need to stand up
to the rigours of Merseyside, grow fast and vigorously :)

It takes a little while to get going, and I don't know how easy it
is to get, but Berberis vulgaris (yes, our native barberry) has the
most vicious needle spines you can imagine, and grows very fast when
established. There are doubtless several other vicious Berberis,
but a lot of them are as cuddly as gorse or holly.

There are some suitable roses, too, but the same remark applies.

Consider Poncirus trifoliata. The New Zealand bush lawyers (Rubus
species) are also worth considering.

Berberis is as Nick suggested a thoroughly nasty plant if a little slow
growing until it gets to around three foot ( we have a couple in the front
garden ) however if you want something fast impenetrable evil and nearly
impossible to handle Himalayan Blackberry is probably the plant . If you
plant it you will find it very difficult to ever get rid of even using
glyphosate which explains why its come back behind the greenhouse again -
want some?
I advise googling it before you answer.

You want Colletias, alias Barbed Wire plants. Go to http://www.hardyexotics.co.uk/ and check out Colletia hystrix and the even more extraordinary Colletia paradoxa. Now you see you really, really want them, don't you. (My wife won't let me...) We visited a garden in Somerset where they had both of them - they become quite large bushes. They get completely covered in flowers with a lovely scent to, hope that isn't too pansy for you. They are plenty hardy enough for Merseyside.

razor wire. I don't know how fast it grows but it really is a most viscous
plant .

Does anyone know where I can buy a Colletia? Armata, paradoxa,
spinosissima or anything else. I've tried a few places that listed
them in the Plant finder - but they didn't actually have one when
I wanted it. Cuttings or seed would do...


Rosa Pteracantha (Rosa Sericea Omiensis Pteracantha) is
good. The thorns look a lot worse than they actually are
which is possibly the effect you want.

Quince has some really nasty thorns.

I don't know how fast-growing it is, though.

You mean Japanese quince, Chaenomeles (also called japonica), I
assume. Some varieties have some thorns, but it isn't really a
well-armoured plant.

I suggest hedgehog holly for both places, tough as old boots. Or gorse,
which produces loads of hayfever triggering flowers in spring, which is good
for anti asbo youths. It's hard to act like a wee hard man in front of the
other neds when your eyes are streaming, nose gushing mucus and keep
sneezing. With the increase in childhood allergies I see pollen producing
plants as an up and coming marketing point.

thorns.

Hmm. Hopefully someone is breeding cultivars which have even bigger
thorns. I saw this at Kew last year and was impressed.

Thanks to echinosum for revealing a source of Colletias. When I've
worked out what to pad out the order with, I'll get a couple.

I meant vishus or vicious or summat like that. I bought both C. armata and
C. cruciata from Burncoose a few years ago at about 6" high and now they are
a whole 12" high.
