My orange tree has been outside for the summer, soon I will bring it
into the conservatory.
I want to really clean it up of insects so it doesn't infect anything
else inside, i'm particularly aware it has scale insects.

What could I use to bring them under control, maybe something
systemic?

thanks
DD

A blunt knife. Yes, just scrape them off.

g'day dd,

we ahve a home made recipe for a 'white oil' spray on our remeidies
page that works well for scale.

look for ants they usually bring the scale insects in, so try to keep
them out of the pots.

And is illegal to use in the UK :-) Not that I am a great lover of
such rules.

Not in the UK, they don't.

An onerous task: take a cotton bud and dip it in the alcohol solution you
clean your tapes, records and CDs with. Clean the scales off the stems of
the leaves with this cotton bud. It takes a long time but it discourages
them for a long time as well. The alcohol dries up, leaving no trace,
unlike using a soap solution, which may clog the leaves' pores.

Is that true? How could white oil be illegal?

His "white oil" is a mix of vegetable oil and washing up liquid.
I really don't think it can be illegal to use that in your garden in Britain.
I buy "friendly" insecticides whose main active ingredient is rape seed oil, and washing up liquid is common practice.
I think you must have had in mind some other conconction when you said that.

I think - think - what Nick meant is that according to EU rules you're not
supposed to use anything for any purpose not designated on the label.
