When to propagate blackberries?
 

Hi - I've just been reading through the group on how to propagate
blackberries - never realised it was so easy! One thing I didn't see
was a guide on when the best time of year to do this. I have some
tasty thornless blackberries in my garden that I would like to get
going in an allotment too. Is it too late to do it this year?

If your Blackberry plants/bushes are really rampant now, grope about at
ground level and see if any have already taken root where they have touched
ground. If so, leave them there but keep and eye on them and when they are
well and truly established, cut the main stem from the master bush and
transplant them to your lotty. I would be inclined to do this very early
spring with plenty of root and soil.

I had a huge Blackberry bush which just spread and spread and spread and
when I 'did' cut it back 'to find the land', I cleared a depth of well over
10 foot x about 200 foot which had set it self.

Hope that helps. (Picked some Blackberries this morning from a new plant
which established itself just off the patio)

In my experience they do it themselves, it's difficult to stop them!

As Mike says, they propagate themselves by the new shoots tipping
themselves in. If they have not done it already, it is too late
for this year. Next year, you could encourage them by holding the
tips of the new shoots down on the earth with a stone or half-brick.
Don't do it too early, or you will break the shoots.

And, as Mike says, just cut the previous year's shoot off near the
new plant, transplant it and it will throw a new shoot. The old
shoot (on the old plant) will then fruit.

If you try it now it will either work or it won't, so you've nothing to
lose by tying the tip of a shoot down into a pot.
