Roots - Getting Rid Off
 

Not got a clue what these roots are nor how to get rid off them.

Last March I dug the area and got 2 buckets of roots, and today it was the same again, these roots just seem to keep growing, does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of them - Many Thanks

They look like shrub or hedge roots to me. What is on the other side of the
wall?

Silver birch usually has that mycelium (spelling?) around the roots.

Sorry for the delay in posting back - the other side of the wall is my Study, we do have trees in our front garden but these are mainly crab apple trees.

The roots start from about 1inch below the surface and seem to go down about 4 to 5 inches and also grow across as well as down, if I let the roots grow then they end up very long and think (about 10mm thick) + they are not easy to drag out of the ground.

I did however cut down some Ivy a couple of years ago, could it be that?

Also I was tempted to put down some strong weed killer as I was only going to dig in some muck and leave the ground over the winter period rather then planting winter bedding plants - the area is like a border area which measures about 2 x 12 feet.

The Crab Apple trees are about 8 feet away from the border area.

Old post I know, but the roots were from a Ash Tree (About 15 feet away) I chopped the tree down last September (2010) and am still getting rid of the roots :(

They bind the soil together which makes it harder to remove the roots, but now the tree has gone and if you spend some time in a small section of the garden at a time then you can remove them, I never realized how far these roots could extend out, never known a tree like it :(
