Accelerate the compost
Got a huge compost heap - mostly grass clipings from a paddock. Seems
reluctant to decompose despite being watered. The inside is still dry and dusty and look more like straw. Anything I can do to speed up the process? I've been adding leaves now that we have loads falling. |

I'd be inclined to add in some well rotted horse manure and water in with urine a very popular solution (no pun intended) on GQT. Its getting a bit late in the year now as the bacteria are more active at summer temperatures but covering with thick cardboard can help to maintain the heat and get the little blighters going. A better idea would be to mix the grass cuttings with strawy material or shredded paper in the ratio of 1 volume of grass cuttings to 1 volume of shredded paper. Also the more you mix the material the faster it will compost - the best way I've found is to fork one pile into an adjacent pile at up to weekly intervals. It should be damp but not wet - about as wet as a damp sponge and it should be the same consistency all the way through - if you have wet or dry areas it needs more mixing. The best thing to do with the leaves is stuff them in a bin liner, put a garden fork through it 2 - 3 times, leave it out of the way somewhere and forget about it for a couple of years. Hope this helps |

I have often been irritated by the fact that most of the material you gather is gathered in the autumn and winter is cold when there will be no decomposition. What can be done about that? 1) Very thick insulation and a low wattage electric heater on the end of a spear which is poked into the compost. 2) Very thick insulation, as above, but heat supplied from a solar collector, and the heat brought down by a heat pipe. Both of these are possible, but what are the economics? It might not be too hard even if you pay out of your own pocket. If a proper price was paid for collection, transport and final disposal I think it should be very economic. Michael Bell -- |
