Moving a Japanese Maple
 

Morning all,

I have a small (approx 4ft tall) Japanese Maple growing in between a conifer and a cotoneaster. Please see following pics:

The conifer is going to get taken out when we have the extension done and I'm worried the extension could also damage the maple. I'm keen to place it in a large pot and keeping it there.

Is this possible and what time of year should I ideally pot the maple?

Hi Nick,

You can pot the maple as soon as it is dormant. I should point out that
it will be happier in the ground though. You can wait 'til late winter if
you want, also.

You will probably need to root prune a little, and make sure your soil is
_really_ well drained. Do not fertilize beyond a little osmocote. Don't
water in the winter, when it leafs out keep the soil moist (but not wet).

Try and choose a pot only slightly larger than the root ball. The reason
is that too large a pot tends to be wetter, to the plant's detriment.

You could just move it, I do that all the time with Japanese Maples, trying
to get the light right.

Maybe I'll conside rmoving the plant to another area of the garden, trouble is that the soil is clay here, so I guess it doesn't matter where I move it, the soil is going to hold the water.

What is the optimum conditions for this type of Japanese Maple?

I have a different variety of Japanese Maple in my garden and it's about 50ft tall :o) so perhaps the conditions are not too bad
