Berberis dawinii, its very prickly like holly. usually flowers now and
again in Autumn. As far as I know its something you can only do from seed
not cuttings, mind you getting the seed before the birds is tricky!

Indeed. A word for the OP, it can get quite large, and suckers. It is
very pretty this time of year.
