Thyme killed by frost? old age?

I have a large area of thyme in my garden that's about 5 years old. Some
time over the winter, it lost most of its leaves and very few of them
are coming back. A Hyssop bush has suffered similarly. Other plants
nearby such as lavender, rosemary, verbena, giant Echium and hardy
fuchsia seem to have survived.

My soil is extremely free draining.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
