Default My Poor apple tree!

Hi

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I planted an apple tree at th eend of last summer . We then got a rescue dog which had a bit of a nibble! As a result the trunk has a small split about 18 inches up. This spring the tree started to produce leaves of the branches which were really healthy..but these have now started to curl and turn yellow. New growth has appeared below the split with lots of leaves on. Is it worth leaving it to see if it recovers or should I chop the top of and let it grow up from the 18 inches?

Thanks in advance
