Hydroponics, cannabis and the police

I am thinking of hydroponics for a project of mine. I searched for
"hydroponic" in Google and almost all of them said "Use our
hydroponics to grow your cannabis"!

I can't imagine that the police don't monitor traffic on these sites
or indeed that some of them aren't sting sites set up by the police
themselves.

How do I go about my little project without having the police
breathing down my neck?

I can imagine the scene;
poster named Scags posts and asks how to do hydroponics and gets this
reply from Sixtieslovechild that says;
"evenin' all"
"in response to your query, dated March 16th, posted on or about
17.15, from a mobile computing device, otherwise known as a laptop
computer, I can offer personal advice and guidance on all manner of
activities of a horticultural nature. I can arrange a personal visit
by myself and 7 of my colleagues while we inspect your premises for
suitability; would 4.00am next tuesday be suitable; we won't need a
key".

Some nurserymen were had up for growing cannabis round here - no not us!
Having been formally charged and taken to court to plead whatever they pled,
they then went home and merrily started up production again. For some
reason, it hadn't crossed their minds that the police would check up on
them! First we knew about it was a call from a local Mr Plod to ask if we
were interested in buying all the equipment!

Use Internet cafes for all such research?

In these parts they confiscate all the equipment and the crop before even
starting a prosecution.

If they did that in this case, they certainly knew where to go to find more.
I suppose being in the trade, so to speak, made it easier for them!

Its a question of scale, large purchases attract attention!

I ran into this recently, looking for an organic aphid spray recommended by
Dutch nurseryman Dick Vandermat, called Spruzit. It seems to only be sold
in Holland by cannabis growing equipment firms. I didn't buy the
product (too
expensive for my uses, I stuck with pyrethra) but I did see that they
"guarantee"
confidentiality, and ship only in unmarked boxes, etc.

Anyway there's nothing illegal about buying hydroponics equipment, nor
would it
be all that easy for police to monitor all the sites in question (the
internet doesn't
work that way.) Since you're not doing anything wrong, and are
certainly a very
small fish in terms of the amount of equipment, why worry?

There's a hydroponics shop about a mile from our house. I've never seen
anyone going in or out but it's still trading ...

There is a significant group of chilliheads who use hydroponics for their particular fix. So I suggest you hang around on some chilli sites like chillisgalore.co.uk to see how they do it. They have a hydroponics forum, but you can't see it unless you register.

Well, I short-circuited all this palaver, and looked up "hydroponics"
in yellow pages and well away from criminality, (they laughed
knowingly at my cannabis worries) they offered me something simple
which will meet my rather unusual needs, if I decide to go ahead with
this project.

Working for a company that manufactures small scale hydroponic systems I run up against these sort of problems all the time. Fortunately the larger companies are much more reliable for information etc. that does not mean some of them do not sell into the aforementioned market, but check out the following www.greenhousesensation.co.uk (me) www.nutriculture.com (manufacturer/wholesaler only but a good source of information) or search for 'Growell' or 'Aquaculture'.
