Prunus Triloba: Brown Bread or Wot?

The only plant in my garden that actually has a label on it so I know what
it is (or should be) I think has gone feral.

From my limited knowledge it looks like the plant was grafted on to a root
stock of around 2 foot. All life at the top appears extinct. However, from
the base a shoot the size of the original stem has developed and that is all
that appears to have any life.

Would I be right in thinking that what is growing is whatever the root stock
was and not the Prunus Triloba?

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/astral....p/picture3.jpg is the shoot
that is coming out of the base. It goes up to about 6 foot with growth
coming off it. Not very attractive growth at that.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/astral....p/picture4.jpg (to the right
of image) is the original growth point which is now just a stump.

Has this bush had it and only fit for ripping up? Or...if this is a feral
growth would cutting it off offer any chance to the original?

Sorry if the pics are a bit iffy. I can get others if it would help any.

Mel.
