I have put in 4 Clematis this year , what advice can you give on pruning and
when to do it
I live in the Midlands

The problem with pruning clematis is that the pruning regime is
different for different types of clematis.

If you really have no idea which ones they are, cut them each back after
they finish flowering the first time, in future it is ok to leave the
ones that started flowering after mid summer untill the winter and cut
them back while dormant and you can leave the earlier flowering ones
almost completely alone (although I think they look better if tidied each
summer) You could unfortunately write a book on clematis pruning
(unfortunately many people have!) but the truth is no one rushes about
the countryside pruning wild clematis and they manage just fine, they
just look better if you do
