Hamamelis Molis

I have a Witch Hazel in my garden. It was bought from a nursery in a pot and
has been in the ground for about 3 years. We are on clay and so a lot of
organic matter was put into the hole at planting, and it has been mulched
each year.

The problem is that while it looks healthy enough and flowers, it resolutely
refuses to grow any bigger!

Any suggestions?

How shaded is it? Also, they really prefer a slightly acid soil.

A lot of people would give good money for a healthy plant that doesn't get any bigger. Probably it is just slow to establish. My Hamamelis did very little in the way of growing for several years. It's only really started doing anything in the last couple of years and I planted it 7 years ago. It's still very small in comparison to mature bushes I have seen. The flowers are a getting better too. Quite a few plants are like that: among other that seemed not to really get going for about 5 years I could mention my Judas tree and Osmanthus delavayi.

Hamamelis do like plenty of water, and don't mind a bit of shade: they are naturally understorey plants.

It is in shade in the mornings and gets full sun from early afternoon
onwards.
