News service - announcement from Malcolm Muir
I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this here, but
I'm fairly sure many in uk.rec.gardening might not be aware. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- We are pleased to announce the upgrade of our Usenet news service. This service has been outsourced to a specialist news provider so we do not anticipate any problems with the upgrade, but customers should note: The new servers will be available for customer use from 16:00 BST on 6th November 2008. Access to the old service will no longer be available after that time. The new service will use the same host name as the current service - news.demon.co.uk and will authenticate by IP address in the same manner as the previous service. There is no synchronisation between the old and the new system. The new system has been running for some time and will have a significant history available. The 'newnews' command is not supported. Customers who collect news using the 'newnews' command will need to reconfigure their news client to use one of the alternative methods of collecting news. Article numbering on the new service is different from the current service. Customers who collect news via article number must reset their news readers to receive articles from the new server. Many news clients will have a command for this or will correct for the change automatically. You may have to tell some software that you've moved to a new news server (even though it has the same name). Initial connection to the new news server may take much longer than usual as your client synchronises with the new article spool. Support issues should still be addressed to the Demon Helpdesk, not the outsource provider. The Demon Internet Suite (Turnpike, Turnpike Six) can collect news either via 'newnews', the default, or by article number. You will need to ensure you are collecting by article number with the new server. Customers already using this method of collection should automatically adjust to the change. There is limited advice on dealing with the above available on our web site: For customers using Turnpike http://www.demon.net/download/pdfs/demon_news_server_turnpike.pdf For customers using Outlook Express http://www.demon.net/download/pdfs/demon_news_server_outlook.pdf Customers using other news clients should contact the supplier of their client for advice. We hope the replacement news service provides a useful enhancement to your enjoyment of our service.
