Planting potatoes --- black polythene
What's the general opinion on planting potatoes beneath black polythene
sheets? Most of my gardening books suggest that method (*); the main argument against seems to be lack of elegance and slugs and snails. (*) Including my favourite, Mr. (Geoffrey) Smith's Vegetable Garden, 33 years after it's publication. Best regards, Jon C. |

You can 'pick potatoes' as they develop, leaving those which have not grown to grow on, the cropping is fantastic, be prepared to gather your crop in a wheelbarrow if, like me, you plant a few rows 30 feet long. (The neighbours loved me as I gave most away) Downside. What a wonderful climate for slugs. What a wonderful scene if a high wind gets up and lifts the poly (I was lucky in that the area I planted was sheltered and is now a block of flats within other buildings) Go for it. Mike |
