Brussel Sprouts
 

Just cleared a bed of brussels, I noticed that there were a number of
very firm large sprouts on them. The seed packet said harvest February,
would they be good to eat this late, or would they have gone bitter? Too
late for this year but might help next.

We are still picking a few similar (Trafalgar) right at the top of the
stems. Taste good to us and neighbours and the frost seems to have improved
the flavour if anything. They won't last much longer though before they
blow.

Bob, am I right in thinking that frost is said to improve the flavour of
sprouts? Must be about the only thing it does improve!

Back in the olden days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and both God
and I were little boys, we would not dream of eating sprouts before
they had been frosted, but fortunately since then much better
varieties have been introduced to replace those "little green roses".

Yes that's what is said, same also about parsnips and leeks.
Personally I think there may be something in it but it might just be
hogwash.

Parsnips IMHO definitely, they are sweeter after a good frosting.
