I've recently seen some Paphs in a Wyvales GC at Windlesham amongst the
usual Phals (also had some Cattleyas and Dendrobiums) and there were lots in
the GC at Syon Park the other day so they are around if you look. Longacres
GC at Bagshot always has a good display and are notoriously cheaper/better
than most.
Alternatively for a better choice you need to look out a specialist Orchid
Nursery in your locality but they are specialist plants and will be more
expensive although it won't cost you to look. I may be able to help find a
nursery, so where, roughly, are you in the UK?
I might say that most orchids are not expensive these days considering what
they were costing just 30 years ago when the sort of Phals you seen in the
sheds at £9.99 (or Sainsburys at £5. ! ) were costing £25 then.

Is Syon park your natural habitate Bob? I was up there on Sunday doing a
rare plant fair! (always Easter Sunday apparently because the GC is shut)

I worked there for a season decades ago when there was a summer only Bank
within the GC. It was Cogswells GC then.
Still have a look around when in the Isleworth/Brentford area which we have
been a lot lately (long story).
Sorry I missed you there last weekend.
Doing any more fairs up this way, the Saville Garden perhaps?

It so happens that a good friend is in the hierarchy of
the orchid world - so I asked him. His reply is as follows:

QUOTE

Paphs are sometimes available at garden centres, M & S etc.,but for some
reason seem to be more expensive than other species. I have seen them at
Castle Gardens (Sherborne) and Yeovil Marks & Sparks.
An orchid nursery that specialises in them is Ratcliffe Orchids Ltd.,
Pitcott Lane, Owlesbury, Winchester, SO21 1LR. Telephone 01962
777664,Website is ratcliffe.uk.com
You will get good quality plants from them but pay the price.
Hope this helps!

The nearest orchid specialists to you would seem to be ...

McBeans Orchids
Cooksbridge,
Lewes,
Sussex
BN8 4PR
Tel: 01273 400228
http://www.mcbeansorchids.co.uk/acat...nd_Phrags.html
They have about 3 acres under fully automated glasshouses.

Laurence Hobbs Orchids Ltd
Bailiffs Cottage Nursery,
Hophurst Lane,
Crawley Down,
W. Sussex RH10 4LN
Telephone 01342 715142
Phone before visiting.

You like Paphiopedilums so also look at Phragmipediums, possibly easier to
grow into a good sized specimen and not something you will find anywhere
other than a specialist nursery IME.

Phalanopsis (moth Orchid) perhaps? Thick leathery tongue like leaves and a
flower spike with a number of flowers.
