Pieris red tip leaves gone yellow
 

a short while ago put some Pieris Forest Flame in some pots with some new
john innes no 3 soil.

the growing tip leaves instead of being red have turned a pale yellow.

should i add some proper garden soil or is there something else i should be
doing to get the red colour back?

Could be chlorotic. And check that it's draining well between watering,
don't over-water and also check the pot is big enough for it.

John Innes compost should be soil based so adding more soil shouldnt
have much ettect.
I wonder if it isn't the leaves just loosing their jvinile colour and
now starting to change towards their mature green colour.

They do turn a rather sickly lime colour as they lose their redness and
become green. Keep an eye on the plant. If all the green leaves seem
generally yellowish, then they may be chlorotic. Pieris prefers ericaceous
compost, so using an acid feed occasionally will help.

Which Gardeninga couple of years ago published a article saying that" not much use for shrubs in pots using ericaseous compost as within weeks with compost containg lime would be washed out with watering" but only with shrubs in pots, just a thought

I was under the impression that Pieris prefer an acid soil. Is JI3 not
more of an alkaline preparation with added lime? The yellowing would
suggest that. Perhaps repotting in ericaceous compost and a good soaking
of sequestered iron may turn things around.

You need ericaceous compost. If you can't easily repot, add plenty of eri
fertiliser.

FWIW pieris struggle in our neutral garden soil. They live, but don't
thrive. However, the ones in the pots with the right compost have reached 5
feet tall and nearly as wide. They always have a great show of coloured
leaves and flower profuciously. The bees love the flowers too :)

Pieris is an acid-lover, and John Innes soil based no 3 is too alkaline. You need to replace the soil with ericaceous compost, or water well wil sequestrene.

new yellow shoots soon turn red (or pink) as they expand and mature.

colour then turn green/yellow, and the "silver" bell-like berries appear
later.

I think it is more attractive than most Pieris I have seen. (So
there)!
