rabbits in the compost
 

I have found a litter of rabbits in the compost heap, I think this is rather
strange place to find them as it is rather exposed and they are quite easy
to see, I always thought that rabbits would give birth in burrows, we have a
fair number in the paddock and they all live in burrows. I did wonder if
these could be hares but I cannot see them well enough to tell as yet, will
have another look tomorrow if the fox hasn't had them over night.

American rabbits often nest in sheltered depressions in the ground and in
brushpiles. Both are pretty exposed; we used to have a cat who in the
spring bunny season would go out in the morning and return in a few minutes
with a teenage rabbit for breakfast.

In our large compost heap (blockwork walls, many tons of compost) a fox dug
an earth for itself. Luckily when it hit the back wall it gave up and left
us with a nice tunnel :)

I have just been out to look at the little rabbit family but they are
nowhere to be seen, maybe some thing has eaten them or maybe the mother
rabbit moved them, last night was very cold and wet they would have been
lucky to survive maybe

If a rabbit feels that the nest has been discovered they will quickly
move them to another place
