Shrub Recommendations Please
 

Hi all

Looking to improve garden screening with perimeter shrubs.
These will be to the north of a copper beach (almost under its canopy)
against a fence.
So need evergreen, shade tolerant, clay/chalk tolerant, dry(ish)tolerant.
Prefer free standing rather than climbing.
Height required 2.5 - 3m, preferably able to be kept to 1m deep x 2m wide
without too much effort.
Location is east yorkshire at top of hill but not too exposed.
Like scented stuff.

Suggestions welcome

Hardly any shrub will thrive in dense shade. But Viburnum Bodnantense
Dawn will do well in partial shade and has sweet smelling blooms in
winter. It will eventually reach 10' in height. It's a superb shrub.

Mahonia or Laurel spring to mind.

There is no scented evergreen shrub that does well in dense shade. I'd
sacrifice the evergreen bit and go for Viburnum Bodnantense - 'Dawn',
which is a fantastic hardy shrub that grows up to 10' tall, with sweet
smelling blooms in late winter or longer periods if winter is mild.
The branches are abundant and grow thickly.

flowers are very visible on bare stems before the leaves appear

What about that variegated box? Is it Buxus Elegantissima? I don't
think it could be called scented, though! Cotoneasters might do it,
too and Lonicera purpusii is semi-evergreen and has fragrant flowers in
winter but won't do well in seriously deep shade.

Laurel is a strong grower and quite challenging to keep to small size -
and it won't flower if you do that.

What about privet - does that grow in shade? Again, shouldn't cut it
back too vigorously or it won't flower, but it is possible to have it
flowering and still keep it about 6ft.

I think it gets rather leggy in shade. Personally, I hate the soapy
smell of its flowers but some people like it, so the OP better find
some and sniff it!

Did you know you'd replied twice?
No, just the first then replied to you. This is the third :-)

Stuff like Eleagnus x ebbingei and Euonymus fortunei will grow practically anywhere. Holly will also grow in the understorey. Won't grow to 3m, but a Daphne odora likes dryish partial shade, is lime tolerant, and is very, very scented. You could mix it in with the others. I also have a Sarcococca of some type thriving in a similar situation.

When I have to plant with a thirsty tree in the vicinity, sometimes I dig a big hole and install a waterproof barrier around the hole, and refill, so that the protected plant gets to keep more of the water that falls on it to itself.
