Could you id the shrub (in Hunstanton btw) please.
Is there an on-line resource to do this, apart from your good selves?

I'd prefer to have seen more detail of the foliage and inflorescences,
but I think that it's cotton lavender (Santolina).

You don't need one, I would put my money on Stewart any day!

Cetainly looks like Santolina - sometimes known as the Curry plant,
but I never figured out why. Anyway I christened mine "Vindaloo" just
to be on the safe side. I got mine from Beth Chatto at Elmstead Market
- hers make beautifully neat clumps, mine is like the one in your
picture only more so!

Possibly because it looks somewhat like Helichrysum italicum, which is
sold under that name. Fide Wikipedia, the culinary curry is Murraya
koenigii, which belongs to the citrus family.

But then I've never figured out why Santolina is called cotton lavender.
(Is the scent considered similar to lavender?)

Clicking a few more links in Wikipedia it appears that it is misleading
on the latter point, curry powder being a mixture of spices, and Murraya
koenigii curry tree.

It doesn't look anything like the Santolina I have in my garden.

Mine has silvery foliage, and is at least 6' tall - albeit it grows
alongside a fence, which probably supports it somewhat.

The more commonly grown cotton lavender is Santolina chamaecyparissus,
which is, as yours, silver or grey in foliage. There are other species.
Santolina rosmarinifolia (aka virens), for example, has green foliage.

It is Santolina virens; an altogether tidier and more pleasantly
fragrant species when compared to the more commonly planted (silver)
S. chamaecyparissus. It's a very fresh green and makes a nice mini
hedge or front of border mound.
