We now have had 14.6 inches of rain so far in this part of South Wales
with rain forcast for the next 5 days,
It's not doing the dahlias a lot of good,
The run off has cut into the ground

Of the last struck cuttings around 70% have died due to the wet and
all the plants have just about stoped growing.
With all the rain the feed has been washed out of the ground and there
is no point in applying a liquid feed till we are due for a few days
of dry.
Had a phone call a couple of days ago from a customer in Deal (Kent)
who said she was just going out to water the plants as it was so dry
there.

It's 33 degrees here David and pretty arid. Talking about Dahlias, I
have lost all but 2 out of an awful lot. I leave them in and ensure
they have more than, I thought, adequate winter protection, last
Winter was severe and it looks as if I will have to start again with
new ones, any medium height, unusual ones you know of?

geting to 9ft +

Is that the D. excelsa, David? It's a wonderful plant. We find it's
so tall and so bushy and floriferous that we have to use strong stakes
here rather than canes. It's well worth it!

I think round about 9 inches Bob, the East winds here would destroy
anything taller. Love the tree dahlia.

difficult to water with a watering can, and we had to water our carrots
today as they were also looking thirsty too.
Walking about on the plot this morning weeding etc and no mud on shoes at
all.

We had that a few weeks ago and a big four feet slide down the windscreen to
add to it but whilst we have had some very light showers, and one heavy
shower, we haven't had any prolonged rain at all.

To support the tree dahlias I have 9ft posts knocked into the ground
every 30 ft then the canes inbetween strung near the top and tied to
the posts, the dahlias are then either tied to the canes or a string
around the clump with 2 or 3 canes

Another 1.15 inches of rain overnight that takes us to 15.75 inches so
far this month with a lot more to come in the next few days.
I wonder if I could field grow waterlilies ?

Oh David, how depressing it is. It's not actually raining here today
but it's not looking good, either. We did start with a sunny day but
not for long! It's particularly hard on someone doing your sort of
work, too.
