Hozelock automatic watering
 

I'm trying to set up a Hozelock de Luxe Auto Kit,
and finding it less than straightforward.
All I really want is to turn on a sprinkler
once or twice a day;
I'm wondering if I could just attach a sprinkler
to the "electronic water timer",
or do I have to use the rather complicated micro-tube system.

Also, it is not clear to me if one is meant to attach
tap - pressure reducer - water timer
or
tap - water timer - pressure reducer?

Any help from hozelock experts gratefully received.

Think of the timer as an automatic opening/closing tap. All the
electronics does is open and close a simple valve.

If you can attach your sprinkler straight to your existing tap then you
can attach it to the timer without anything else.

which is said to improve performance.
But the instructions are ambiguous
as to which side of the timer it goes.
Maybe it doesn't matter ...

It should matter but physically you don't want to hang the timer off the
pressure reducer. The timers are relatively heavy and are better
installed as close as possible to a pipe/tap that is firmly attached to
a wall or post.

If the timer is fitted to tap or service value pressure reduction can be
achieved by turning off the tap or valve a tiny bit. Both my timers are
attached to outside taps and with no pressure reducers. They have been
working this way for years without problems. The pipes connected to the
taps have inline double check valves to stop any contaminated water
getting back into the supply.

Use decent batteries!
From experience, these type of devices don't like rechargeable
batteries.

Don't use pound shop special value batteries - they will fail on the
hottest day and then leak destroying the batter terminals.

I use Duracell ProCell which have a 7 year shelf life and last for a
year running twice per day in the spring/summer/autumn and perhaps once
every 5 days in the winter. I change the batteries each Spring even
though they may still work

My instruction leaflet is clear. It says:

3. INSTALLING THE SYSTEM:
3.1 Connect to the tap using one of the
methods below:
a). Screw the Pressure Regulator (2760)
directly onto the outside tap.
b). Screw the Pressure Regulator (2760)
onto a water computer already fitted
to the outside tap.

So, when using a timer, connect the timer directly to the tap and the
pressure regulator to the timer.

the way, don't try to connect a micro sprinkler to the mains without
fitting the pressure regulator -- unless you want to blow your
sprinkler into orbit.
