What apple trees do I plant..
 

I am looking to plant two apple trees in the front garden. I have two good
size areas one for an eating apple and one for a cooking apple, well that's
the plan.
I would like to let then get to about 9-10 ft and then keep them that way.
Anyone have any suggestions on what type to plant as I have never done this,
I am looking for a tasty apple and good cropping tree.

For a cooker try "Arthur Turner", it's the only fruit tree to also get an
Award of Garden Merit for it's flowers. Makes a change from the common
Bramley. Good big apples too, lovely baked. :-)

Have you considered minarettes? As you don't have much room they may be
ideal

I have the space in the front, but would like to keep them to a size that
makes them easy to pick, the ideal size for me is the ones you see in
commercial orchards.
Also 10 ft will still allow the other plants in the garden and grass under
to see some good light.

So we have a cooker now, what eating should we go for?

Ask a reputable specialist fruit supplier, what two varieties would do
well **in your area** and fertilise each other.

The rootstock is the main influence on height- for the height
you specify MM106 rootstock- one of the more widely
available- will probably be OK. The apples that do best
vary from region to region- with the main difference being broadly btw the
wetter West and the drier East, though
there is also some N/S variation. You don't say where
you are, but here's my selection so far in East Anglia.

Another reason to go for "AT" as apposed to Bramley is that "AT" is a good
pollinator and is also self fertile whereas Bramley won't pollinate
anything, it's a Triploid.
