Toad lily/trycyrtis

Just been watching some 'bees' around my toad lily plant and they seem to
hover outside the flowers that are open. Nothing seems to go into the
centre of the flowers.
Is this peculiar to the plant or to the bees I can see?

Why do you put 'bees' in inverted commas? Are you not sure what type of bees
or flies they are?

In their native habitat Tricyris flowers are pollinated by a particular
species of bumblebee (Bombus diversus). Perhaps the unusual 'bee guide'
markings of the Toad Lily are confusing to other species of insect.
