Training Hedgehog to graze raised garens
 

My mate hedgehog was out last night patroling the garden for slugs and
snails. We have had a hell of a load of rain the past 2 weeks so the S&S
have been
out in force.

Anyway, I lifted hedgehog in to one of my raised garden (bout a foot off
gound level) tonight to see if he'd east the slugs there. HH happily seem to
scoff his way through the slugs. I went out later in the evenign to check on
him and he had climbed down one of the ramps I had set up. He is outside
again tonight so I poped him back on the garden and showed him a few tasty
slugs which he wolfed down. I wonder whether I might be able to train him to
climb up a ramp onto the gardens and graze at his own leisure?

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I haven't but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he's caught onto the
idea! They know a good thing when they see one and you're very lucky
he's there. Apart from that, they're enchanting little creatures, IMO.

'Any' animal can be trained. If you have the rapport and time with said
hedgehog, he/she will respond as long as you treat it kindly. Reward is the
secret........... as you have found.

Lucky you. I have a dire rabbit problem so my garden is well fenced,
keeps the rabbits out but the flip side is the hedgehogs cannot get in
either! :-(

I popped little HH in a box with a few slugs which he wolfed down and then
went walk about on the garden. I note he even fertilised it for me.

grids to let hedgehogs escape if they fall in
R :-)

yes, both nights he has made his way off the garden via a ramp so he
obviously isn't stupid. I am just hoping he knows how to walk up them as
well.

Daughter and Son in Law have the whole of their garden walled because of the
rabbit problem :-)

So where did they get in? :-((

Under the main gates to the drive :-((

They have had to fit chicken wire as a skirt!!

Hedgehogs are very good climbers, so there's nothing stopping him using your
ramp *except* the slug banquet at ground level! You just need more
hedgehogs, that's all! :~))

One seems to be managing to use the cat-flap here, and with no ramp up
to it.

However, I thought from one a couple of sites I've read on HHs, S&S
only account for around 5% of their preferred diet.

The Maori of New Zealand traditionally protected their kumara (sweet potato) crop from caterpillars and the like by encouraging/training gulls to pick the pests off.

Some people in Britain place seed feeders among crops to attract tits, which pick off aphids while queuing for the seeds.

Try putting him near the top of the ramp rather than on the garden.

Don't forget to provide him with a "house" to hibernate in for the winter plenty of straw in a water and wind proof shelter, that way he'll be about in the spring when you need him again.
