OT Mandarin ducks
 

I'm sort of thinking of giving someone a pair of these as a present.
But I have absolutely no idea how one would go about transporting them
to the Channel Islands. Can that be done, does anyone know?

Years ago I was visiting a friend up in Newcastle upon Tyne. We
collected a pair of Mandarins for his pond from the station. They came
from one of his friends in Sussex. I don't know how long the ducks
were in the box but part of trip was overnight. The ducks were happily
swimming around the pond within a few minutes of being released from
the box. The box had a load of straw and paper for the ducks to
snuggle down. It also had lots of holes in it for ventilation. I don't
know if this is the way ducks should be transported but it seemed to
work OK.

I would expect that a breeder/retailer would know. I don't imagine that
there are any physical difficulties - they probably still ship racing
pigeons all round the country. There might well be legal hurdles - the
DEFRA web site says that veterinary health certificates are required for
some livestock exports to the Channel Islands, and I can imagine that
people might worry about bird flu, and other pathogens.

I also found a waterfowlonline.co.uk, but that only delivers to (if the

Someone living in Scotland (IIRC) used to post here and kept all kinds
of waterfowl. I'm trying to remember her name.... This pond used to
have Mandarins on it years ago and when my ex-fil died, all of them
just disappeared. Very weird.

I can very easily check any legal requirements or drawbacks with
importing them to Jersey. I spoke to one of the relevant departments a
couple of weeks ago about taking plants in. It's one of them nice
things about a comparatively small place - it's much easier to talk to
an actual person! Thanks for that url - I'll look at that and see if
there's a supplier who knows the pros and cons.

Thanks, Steve. If it's going to be done, the best way may be in a box
in the back of the car on the ferry. Easier for them and less scary
than a plane, I should think!
