Have I Lost my Fuchsias?
 

I have overwintered my Fuchsia collection in pots in my cold
greenhouse as I have always done. (kept them on the dry side). This
year there is no sign of them producing fresh growth as they usually
do about now. I have scraped and broken the stems and they don't seem
very green. Am I being a bit impatient or have I lost them?

Possibly, but they may come back from the roots. Been a nasty winter this
year with days below freezing and outside constant rain such that I worry
for our garlic which is not looking well at all. Don't think it likes
growing in a very cold paddy field.

I'd say you're being impatient.
I remember years ago a mature F. Magellanice Alba being "killed off"
I cut it right back to ground level and no signs of any green.
Mid July it started shooting and ended the season almost 4ft tall.
Depending on the variety they can be tough brutes.
"In the old days" a lot of fuchias were over wintered in clamps like
potatoes.

Yes - definately too early yet !

It has been so unusually cold in unheated green houses this year
that things are bound to be running late.

I am waiting for signs of life with my f's in similar condition
but will only start watering when 5f is a guaranteed minimum temp 24/7.

Global warming -- umm !

Bit soon, mine are still twigs!, when its a bit warmer spray them with
tepid water to help them 'break'

I kept thinking that with my fuchsias last year. Of 10 in the greenhouse
only 1 came back. :-(

Surprisingly, my garlic is looking very fit and healthy all of a sudden!
And I finally got round to putting out 3 rows of onions yesterday, too.
(just the unspecified variety tricolour ones, holding onto the branded
variety ones for a while, just in case!)

Every year I suspect my fuchsias of dying on me. Every year they come back strong. They'll just look a bit twiggy until then. Focus on the crocus, that's what I say. The bulbs that are up at this time of year are amazing.

Curios if your fuchsias did grow back over the winter we had?
