Do glyphosate based weedkillers only affect green tissue? In other words can
I carefully spray the ground elder without seriously affecting the big
mature tree paeony growing in the middle of it?

Glyphosate will attack most things it touches.

Spray carefully to avoid damage where you do not want it. Spot spray
if you can.

Dont spray in windy conditions
Dont spray on hot days ( whatever those are !) as it can rise with the
effects of heat.

I can't see it translocating to roots on a mature tree to cause a
problem.

g'day tahi,

you need to get the glypho' on the leaves for it to begin to work, and
for trees depending on maturity it may have little or no effect, so if
you are spraying at ground level it should not affect the tree in
anyway.

I wouldn't take the chance, I know they say it's not residual etc BUT
A tree paeony is not like spraying around a Tree.
I don't know the area you have to treat, if it is not to big then try
using a brush of foam pad diped in glyphosate and wipe the leaves with
it, OR mix with deturgent and shake it so that you have foam and use
that on the leaves.
If you do spray leave it till the evening when the wind is usually
less, use as low a presure as you can.
I don't like the stuff, and don't use it except on things like Couch
grass "Twitch" to some.

Glyphosate is absorbed through leaves, not woody tissue. It is inactivated
by clay particles in soil.

But if sprayed onto bare wood, and the weather remained dry, it is possible
it could be washed onto sprouting buds lower down the stem when it rained.
It's extremely unlikely, and the likelihood of a sufficient amount being
absorbed to do any damage is very low.

If you are concerned, just wrap some only polythene round the paeony stems
before you spray and wash it off the outside after a couple of days and then
remove the polythene.

To repeat another post from a while back, thicken glyphosate with wallpaper
paste then paint on leaves, anyone tried this method?

Another way is to wear a pair of cheap cotton gloves over rubber ones. Then
soak the cotton with glyphosate and wipe the offending plants. Works well
for invasive couch grass too.

Not sure what kind of sprayer you're using but if you use one with a
proper herbicide nozzle (sometimes called a flood jet) it sprays a fan
shaped sheet rather than a hollow cone of droplets. Less drift with
the herbicide nozzle and easier to see where it's going. If you can,
work against the light, then you can see a little 'rainbow' of
drifting droplets at the edge of the fan - that's what you need to
keep a sharp eye on.
I would be extremely careful about spraying very close to a tree
paeony. Don't forget Glyphosate is translocated so hitting ground
elder leaves a few inches from your paeony may be sufficient to see
the weed off safely or at least weaken it enough to make manual
removal quite easy.
