Cheers.

It doesn't seem to me to be paranoid. One significant problem is that the
web forum doesn't thread conversations like usenet, resulting in confusion
to people on gardenbanter (hence the "Clematis ID Continued" thread).

Participants in gardenbanter clearly think they're participating in a web
forum, when they aren't. There's surely nothing wrong with pointing that
out, is there?

""Pointing things out"" is one thing.

Going over the top in details and instructions and sheer bloody mindedness,
is paranoia.

In future ................ WATCH ...... and you will see I am, once again,
correct.

Kindest possible regards

Provided those who use Gardenbanter to come here know it is a UseNet
Newsgroup and nothing to do with Gardenbanter, that UseNet predates www, and
that there are other/better ways of posting comments here direct, I have no
problem.

Amazing how aggression can come to the fore in a gardening group.

Hatred is such a nasty word when the flowers are so beautiful.

Gardening and gardening knowledge 'should' be appreciated wherever that
knowledge comes from. Even by those, such as myself, who do not have a vast
gardening background and our gardens are miniscule, 'jambed between a
railway line and a main road' as has been posted here recently.

I wonder if said aggression is spewed out against certain gardening
magazines? Is one gardening magazine slated against any other?

Gardening on TV, we have all seen just how aggression and hatred is thrown
against certain gardening TV presenters.

Life is so short as well :-))))

Do have a nice day tomorrow, and don't forget to vote, I feel sure ALL
gardeners will vote Green. No? Why?

Mike ............. Crowe that is :-))

Mike Crowe is a long lasting troll in this group. He is ignored or
disliked in equal measure so avenges himself by that sort of remark. It's
wrong and unfair to this group but as he is not liked here, he's not
concerned about that. uk.rec.gardening is a newsgroup and not a forum and
anyone can join us by using a newsreader and Google groups. gardenbanter
pinches all our posts and uses them to create a forum that is not of their
making originally. And in doing so, it uses every one of us to promote
commercial interests but without acknowledging it's doing that, either.

A very warm welcome to you Martin.

As others have said, you will find all the discussions a lot easier to
follow if you can post directly to uk.rec.gardening with a newsreader
program rather than seeig them second-hand via gardenbanter. I share
the view that gardenbanter is unreasonable in the way it 'steals' the
content of newsgroups, but on the other hand it does bring new readers
here who would otherwise not have seen what the group has to offer.

However you get here though, you will find a great collection of
people sharing their love and knowledge of gardening. Unfortunately,
the group is like a garden in that it has a few unpleasant pests that
crawl out from time to time. Fortunately they are very easy to spot
and you will probably have seen one already.

Enjoy!

Surely, the name of the game here is for one gardener to help another,
regardless of where the plee for help comes from? As soon as a new poster,
via garden banter arrives, he/she is jumped on from on high about posting
directly here....not a nice welcome is it? Live and let live I say.
Anyway, Welcome martin :)

This poster was not "jumped on" as you put it, he was welcomed to this
Newsgroup by me.
I also suggested he look up "Newsgroup" so he is aware of what it is he has
asked a question on, it not being anything like a web forum.
As I have said elsewhere, I don't have a problem with folks using Gb to get
here just as long as they realise what they are actually doing, some ISPs
don't carry Ngs any more after all.

Or better still, subscribing to a newsfeed such as Eternal-September,
which is free, or one of the more comprehensive ones, which are
reasonably priced.

I am a simple soul and only tend to use basic programs on the
computer hence when joining this group I did so using the same
program I use for email, the one that came with the computer,
Outlook express. All this talk of "newsfeed" "newsreaders" and
"Google groups" seems unnecessary. Or is it? Perhaps my service
provider includes for free something that makes life easy for
simple souls like me.

If you use outlook express try it, just click on "Tools" at the
top and you get a drop down menu which (on mine) includes a
"Newsgroups" option. This then lists hundreds of newsgroups that
are free to join.

Ian

That wasn't to do with gardenbanter not threading in the same way as usenet, it was that gardenbanter had a glitch, and took some posts which in the morning had appeared as a new topic with its own heading, and in the the afternoon dumped them in the middle a different topic which was all about tomatoes or something! Even gardenbanter's not meant to work like that!

But I'm not going to the hassle of finding a suitable newsreader for just one newsgroup. I shall just sit here and grumble. Sad though it is, I think usenet's days are numbered.
