Default Replacing a hedgetrimmer recoil starter cord

Has anyone here done this ...... Is it easy ?
I have Spear & Jackson petrol model and cord is fraying so I thought
I'd better replace it before it goes !
Is it straightforward or had I better take it in to the repair shop

Thanks for any help

I'm not familiar with your appliance, but speaking generally, cords are
fairly easy to replace by any reasonably competent DIYer. A bit of trial and
error to get the tension right may be in order.

?

Yes, normally it would be lost when the cord snapped. That's where the trial
and error comes in. Since yours hasn't snapped yet, you may or may not be
able to mark the relative positions of two adjacent parts to help getting it
right.

Mark the positions and count the number of turns/part turns when you
take the old cord off.

Turns to unwind the spring not turns of cord around the pully... B-)

Be carefull, there are no spare parts available for Spear & Jackson petrol products to the best of my knowledge (imported from china and "stickered" with a familier sounding name.... same as JCB garden products, Power Devil, etc etc etc!)

When you remove the Recoil Starter Mechanism from the engine on the underside you will see the plastic Recoil Pulley. Behind this Pulley is the Recoil Spring which is similar to tensioned clock spring. Only remove the pulley if you are confident you have removed all of the tension from the spring but in some cases you can re-thread a new cord on to the pulley "insitu" without having to actually remove the pulley. Removal of the pulley while there is still tension it may result in injury.... if your unsure, try and find a specialist who is willing to work on Spear & Jackson product as most will not.

Thanks for advice - shame about pull cord going as this machine is not
a bad bit of kit for the price - it's done well and still a bit more
life in it yet ......
Just a thought ..... as the cord is fraying 10cm from cord handle if I
cut it and reconnect pull handle would this cause problems ?
Recoil spring permantly under increased tension etc.

That much shouln't hurt. Easiest way is to slide the handle down the cord,
then cut and re-tie.

If you still need a new cord, generic ones are available, it doesn't need to
be specific to your machine.
