Outlook Express is a proper newsreader.
Theres nothing wrong with it.
It won't affect your computer.
Some people just don't like Microsoft for some reason.

better than O.E.
(I imagine - since I last had to use it, it has probably decided to
do the washing up as well).

Yes, I've tried agent. I found it harder to work, and irritating as I
couldn't have both my email and newsgroups up at the same time in the same
programme. Netscape and OE are the only proggies I've found so far that
allow me to do this.

appearing at all, or mark them read, or even 'ignore thread'

My newsreader is not a mail program, but nevertheless allows
me to mail articles to other people with a press of a key.
It just passes it on to the mail sender. And if I want to
have mail and news open at the same time, that's easy too --
I just open up both programs at once. In fact, that's
easier than having them both in the same program, because I
can switch between them much more easily.

That's easily done in Agent. All you have to do is click on "Reply via
email" rather than "Follow up Message".

bits and pieces too. Agent can be obtained from www.forteinc.com - you
can get a 'lite' version called Free Agent which does not have all the
bells and whistles, free of charge. NB I don't work for them, or any
other company making money from sales of software!

Historically, software (not only Microsoft's!) such as Outlook Express
that claims to do a number of different things, do some of them better
than others, and newsreading was one of the things I understand it has
not previously done so well. Since there is minimal revenue raising
possibility in usenet for software companies, it tends to be a low
priority for them.

So, I should have said 'not a -specialised- newsreader' (or something
of the kind). It is unlikely to adversely affect your computer, but
you might find software specifically designed for the job makes using
usenet more of a pleasure.

at the same time.

At the time I started using Agent, MS products were way behind for
newsreading, but they have obviously caught up. I guess familiarity
with Agent makes me comfortable with it, and you are comfortable with
OE for the same reason.
